Continental’s German Plants Achieve ISCC PLUS Certification, Advancing Sustainable Material Goals for 2050

(IN BRIEF) Continental’s ContiTech facilities in Waltershausen and Eislingen have achieved ISCC PLUS certification, marking them as the first Continental plants in Germany to reach this sustainability standard. This certification allows Continental to integrate renewable and recycled materials into its production processes without changes to existing systems, supporting the company’s goal of fully sustainable material sourcing by 2050. Head of Sustainability Anne Windberg Baarup emphasized that these certifications help Continental and its clients advance toward circular and bio-based economies.

(PRESS RELEASE) HANOVER, 31-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The ContiTech sector of Continental recently achieved a significant sustainability milestone as its facilities in Waltershausen and Eislingen, Germany, became the first Continental plants in the country to receive the ISCC PLUS certification. This internationally respected certification validates Continental’s adherence to stringent sustainability protocols in the mass balance of raw materials, enabling the seamless integration of renewable and recycled resources into established manufacturing systems. Through ISCC PLUS, Continental can precisely track certified material usage across its value chain without altering existing production methods, fostering greater efficiency and supporting alternative material adoption.

Anne Windberg Baarup, Head of Sustainability for ContiTech, highlighted this achievement as a step forward in Continental’s journey toward climate-neutral materials. “This certification reflects the dedication of Continental’s experts to advancing sustainable solutions in material production. With mass-balance approaches, we are helping both our company and our global clients progress towards circular and bio-based economies,” Baarup noted.

Certified products produced at the Waltershausen plant include rubbers such as butadiene and EPDM, used in a range of applications like tires and seals. At Eislingen, certified materials include Xpreshn products for automotive interiors, derived from sustainable sources such as tall oil (a paper by-product) and food waste oils, alongside recycled plastic polymers.

These certifications add to Continental’s ISCC PLUS-certified plants in Portugal, Slovakia, and China, with plans to expand this standard to more locations worldwide. As part of its broader sustainability strategy, Continental aims for full reliance on renewable and recycled materials by 2050, supporting a closed-loop, circular economy in material production. This certification marks another step toward Continental’s ambitious target of 100% sustainable material use in all products within the next few decades.

About ISCC

Founded in 2010 through a multi-stakeholder initiative, the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is a globally applicable and leading certification system designed to enhance traceable, sustainable, deforestation-free, and climate-friendly supply chains. ISCC certifications are widely recognized and cover sustainable agricultural biomass, biogenic wastes and residues, non-biological renewable materials and recycled carbon-based materials. The development and implementation of different certification standards is ISCC’s tool to promote its mission to mitigate climate change and bring more traceability into global markets and supply chains. The ISCC PLUS standard, in particular, supports the transition to a circular economy and bioeconomy. This voluntary certification standard validates the sustainability characteristics of alternative feedstocks throughout the entire supply chain, from origin to end customer.
