ANDRITZ Secures Contract for Advanced Sewage Sludge Incineration Plant in Germany

(IN BRIEF) International technology group ANDRITZ has been contracted by German waste management service provider MVA Bielefeld-Herford GmbH to supply an EcoFluid bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) boiler system for a new sewage sludge mono-incineration plant. This plant, designed to handle 35,000 tons of dry substance per year, will serve approximately 80 municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. The incineration process will produce ash for phosphorus recovery, a vital resource mandated for recycling by German regulations. The generated steam will support local electricity and heating needs. The plant is expected to start operations in June 2027.

(PRESS RELEASE) GRAZ, 16-Jul-2024— /EuropaWire/ — German waste management service provider MVA Bielefeld-Herford GmbH has awarded an order to the international technology group ANDRITZ to deliver an EcoFluid bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) boiler system for a new sewage sludge mono-incineration facility. This new plant will facilitate the efficient and reliable disposal of sewage sludge and enable the recovery of valuable phosphorus.

Project Manager of MVA Bielefeld-Herford, Alexander Krenzer, commended ANDRITZ’s advanced technical proposal and their demonstrated expertise, performance, and dedication. “ANDRITZ presented a technically advanced concept and impressed us with their expertise, performance, and commitment. We are sure that we have found a strong and reliable partner and look forward to implementing the project together,” Krenzer stated.

The new facility will feature a highly efficient boiler designed on an adiabatic concept, including a waste heat steam generator capable of processing 35,000 tons of dry substance per year. The boiler will incinerate sludge from approximately 80 municipalities across North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. This process will ensure resource-efficient and environmentally friendly disposal, adhering to the German sewage sludge regulation (AbfKlärV).

The mono-incineration process produces ash from which phosphorus, a critical yet finite and non-renewable resource, can be extracted. The German sewage sludge regulation mandates the recycling of phosphorus from sewage sludge. The steam generated from the incineration process will be directed to the existing waste incineration plant, which in turn will produce electricity for the public grid and supply heat to the local district heating system.

“We are honored to partner with MVA Bielefeld-Herford on this strategic project,” said Benjamin Klammer, Sales Project Manager at ANDRITZ. “This contract underscores our commitment to deliver cutting-edge technology that supports a circular economy. We look forward to a successful collaboration.”

ANDRITZ’s responsibilities include the engineering, supply, erection, and commissioning of the boiler plant, along with a dry flue gas cleaning system. The plant is slated to commence operations in June 2027.
